Ben Hall
Born in Annapolis,
Maryland, Ben Hall and his family moved to Etowah, Tennessee just before
his first birthday. There he eventually picked up the trombone at age
eleven and played in the local school bands for a few years.
Ben and his family
then moved to Newark Delaware, where he began to take trombone playing
seriously by studying with Phil Taylor. Eventually he would study with
Dr. D.J. Hildebrandt, who would remain his teacher while he attended
the University of Delaware, earning a Bachelors degree in Music Education.
Ben continued his
education by studying improvisation with Robert "Boysie Lowery"
(teacher of Clifford Brown and Ernie Watts), by attending Temple University
(studying under Fred Scott), and by seeking out advice and help from
professional trombonists (such as Jiggs Whigham, Bill Reichenbach, Bruce
Fowler and Doug Elliot).
Persistence paid
off by being able to travel with bands through Europe, Central America
and North America. Ben has performed with such artists as Dizzy Gillespie,
Clark Terry, Lee Konitz, the Four Tops, the Temptations, Ernie Watts,
Denis DiBlasio, Bobby Rydell and Betty Buckley. Some of the places where
Ben has performed include Wolftrap Farm Park and the Kennedy Center
as well as the Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Adams Morgan
Festival in Washington D.C. and for President Bushs' & Clinton's
Inaugurations.
Currently, Ben
and his family live in the Washington D.C. area where he is teaching,
working as a freelance trombonist, and completing various recording
projects as trombonist and composer/arranger for the WAMA (Washington
Area Music Awards) award winning artists including Lilo Gonzalez y los
de Mt Pleasant and other DC artists.
